‘Place in the Sun’ Wines Splash Down at WE ARE ONE Colour Festival

Posted on: 29 October 2013

Revellers will be sure of their Place in the Sun at the WE ARE ONE Colour Festival, as they savour the taste and enjoyment of the Fairtrade certified wines. Place in the Sun is the official wine sponsor for the annual musical extravaganza, which brings fun-lovers to their feet on 21 March in Cape Town and 22 March in Johannesburg.

The popular festival encourages festival-goers to dress in white and enjoy a day of top dance music, sun and hourly paint powder throw countdowns. This year, award-winning festival organiser Seed Experiences has secured dance legend Felix Da Housecat as the headlining artist.

“It was evident from the start that a synergy exists between WE ARE ONE, which is a festival inspired by fun, colour and unity, and Place in the Sun, a brand that stands for the bright, the vibrant, the cheerful and the humorous,” said Place in the Sun Marketing ManagerDè-Mari Kellerman.

Place in the Sun wines are characterful and express a spirit of optimism and joy. The range includes an Unwooded Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet blanc.Bold and rich in varietal character, they are easy to drink, refreshing and soft on the palate. The grapes are sourced from the country’s premier winegrowing regions, and are certified by FLO-CERT under the Fair Label Organisation (FLO) Standards that form part of Fairtrade. The accessibly priced wines are made in the cellar of Zonnebloem wines under the hand of Cellarmaster Deon Boshoff.

Part of the Cape Legends stable of fine wines,Place in the Sunis committed to creating wines which speak to the spirit of social upliftment. This is an area of key interest to festival organiser Seed Experiences (the company who created the Rocking the Daisies brand and festival), which has been widely recognised for its sustainable business practices and green initiatives.

Place in the Sun buys its grapes at a premium rate, with the profits going into a farm workers’ trust, to be used to build schools, fund training opportunities and create a vegetable garden to improve the nutrition of workers and their families. “Our vision is to empower farm workers to uplift their communities, making for happy people and wines that reflect this joyful character,” said Boshoff.

The Fairtrade credentials of Place in the Sun Wines are close to Boshoff’s heart. He grew up the son of a farm worker in Grabouw. “I was luckier than most.” He explains: “My education gave me a head start. I don’t have the constant and overwhelming anxiety of poverty plaguing me that my parents had when we were growing up. That gives you greater freedom to think and explore and develop.”

Furthermore it has an effect on the quality of the wines. “When the people who are growing and harvesting the grapes know they are a valued and integral part of winemaking, they take extra care and it shows in the quality of the grapes. I try to capture that sense of care by letting the fruit characters come through just as they are in Place in the Sun wines. It’s my way of honouring their role.”
