unwooded-chardonnayThe 2013 vintage of Place in the Sun Unwooded Chardonnay was the only gold medal winner worldwide in the under £10 category in the latest The Drinks Business Chardonnay Masters competition.

Bright, fresh and vibrant with flavours reminiscent of pears, peaches and apricots, the soft-textured white is a Fairtrade wine. The cellar pays a premium for the grapes from vineyards in Devon Valley near Stellenbosch, and the money is invested in social projects to benefit farmworkers.

The Chardonnay Masters, run by respected UK-based drinks publicationThe Drinks Business, involved several price categories and styles of Chardonnay. The panel, comprising nine Masters of Wine judged wines from all over the world.

The Place in the Sun wine achieved the highest score in the under £10 category, where the standard was regarded as impressive. As judge Emma Symington MW was quoted as saying: “I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the sub-£10 unoaked Chardonnays – in terms of their fruit character, balance and even finesse.”

“This is a wine that offers terrific taste and value,” says marketing manager for the brand, Radley Connor, “but as importantly, when you choose a Place in the Sun wine, you know you are making a positive contribution to the lives of others. The premiums pay for education, sports, nutritional and health projects.”

South Africa’s first university graduate within the Fairtrade community, Alvercia Juries, recently earned a nursing degree, thanks mostly to the Place in the Sun premiums.  She has become an important role model for her community and now two other young adults are studying for business management qualifications, including her sister Chandré.

Place in the Sun was one of the first brands in South Africa to earn the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association (WIETA)-accredited Ethical Seal for promotion of fair labour practices.

Connor says the wine, that retails locally for around R46 and is available from Makro, Pick ‘n Pay and other selected stockists, is a great match with grilled seafood and chicken and pizzas and pastas with cream-based toppings. The vintage currently on sale is the 2015.
