Place in the Sun’s Thanksgiving

Place in the Sun Wines hosted a SecretEATS dinner at Landtscap in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch, to observe the US national holiday, Thanksgiving, that is celebrated on the last Thursday of November.

The event, held on the farm from which the Fairtrade-accredited brand sources its grapes, was arranged by underground supper club SecretEATS. Celebrity chef Sue-Ann Allen prepared the dinner.

Money raised from the dinner and matched by Place in the Sun is being used to buy equipment for the crèche on the farm, attended by the children of farm workers.

Place in the Sun also pays a premium for the grapes it receives from the Fairtrade-certified farm. A committee elected by the workers decides on how to spend the funds. Apart from a series of educational and recreational initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of the community of 250, the committee also runs two vegetable gardens. The crops ensure a nutritious diet for the workers and their children, who number around 180.

There are five wines in the Place in the Sun range, all available from selected stockists. The juicy, flavourful Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz retail for around R52, while the unwooded Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc sell for around R42.
